Expertise

Professor Shen teaches courses on Chinese language, literature, theater, and culture, including Chinese martial arts literature and film, as well as Asian women’s literature. Professor Shen’s research explores early modern Chinese drama and fiction and their adaptations; she has published scholarly articles and books on these topics. Her recent publication is a co-translation of Li Yu’s chuanqi drama, A Couple of Soles: A Comic Play from Seventeenth-Century China. She is also interested in Qing dynasty palace performance and book culture. Her current research examines Shuihu (Water Margin) dramas. Professor Shen is the editor of CHINOPERL: Journal of Chinese Oral and Performing Literature.
